Every year, until the last rally of the Australian Open, I wallow in the torpor and opulent sensuality of the Australian summer.

Of course nostalgia is deceitful. The more we strive to recreate perceived perfection the more elusive it can become. Our summers do not so much change as we do. Time is fleeting.

But today as I watch that first ball amid the roar of a huge MCG, time will stand still. I will immerse myself with my fellow pilgrims of all faiths and none. We can all savour the joy of being alive.
