Tycoon leaves Russia after surprise pardon

Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the Russian oil tycoon jailed for a decade after criticising president Vladimir Putin, has been freed by a presidential pardon and immediately flew to Berlin.

Once Russia's richest man, the 50-year-old looked was greeted by German well-wishers on the tarmac after landing on a private jet.

Mr Putin, who surprised Russians by announcing Mr Khodorkovsky's pardon on Thursday, said he was acting out of "principles of humanity".

Observers say the move could deflect international complaints about Mr Putin's human rights record as Russia prepares to host the Winter Olympics at Sochi in seven weeks time.

Canada's top court strikes down anti-prostitution laws

The Supreme Court in Canada has struck down key sections of a law that effectively criminalised prostitution by banning brothels and soliciting on the street.

The court voted nine to zero to overturn the restrictions, saying they heighten risks, and prevent people engaged in a risky activity from protecting themselves from harm.

The Canadian government had argued that prostitutes choose to accept those risks, however the court found that vulnerable people do not always choose to become prostitutes of their own accord.
