Rolf Harris facing three fresh sex assault charges

Rolf Harris is facing three further charges of sexual assault in Britain, including one against a girl aged seven or eight in the late 1960s.

Harris had previously been charged with nine charges of indecent assault involving two complainants dating back to the 1980s, and four counts of making indecent images of children.

The Australian entertainer will now face fresh charges of alleged assault against females aged 19 in 1984, aged seven or eight in 1968 or 1969, and aged 14 in 1975.

The Crown Prosecution Service says the new allegations relate to one existing complainant and two new ones.

Harris, 83, will first face a plea hearing on January 14, when his defence has indicated he will plead not guilty.

Tony Abbott's blame game can't last forever

Blaming one's predecessors is a tried and true tactic for any incoming government which finds that its pre-election promises have been just a touch on the generous side.

The problem is, this is no longer entirely believable. We already know the previous lot have, to a certain extent, stuffed up the economy; that's why we voted them out. And we voted the new lot in not to whinge about it, but to fix things.

So while there might still be some value in continuing to blame Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd, it seems the punters are now ready to put their baseball bats away until the next time they are disappointed.

Bank regulator imposes new risk hurdles for 'too-big-to-fail' lenders

Australia's banking regulator is introducing higher financial stability hurdles for the four major lenders, as part of a global effort to ensure big banks can withstand economic shocks.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority has announced that it will force the banks to increase the amount of cash they hold in reserve as a buffer against financial crises.

It says the changes come amid the growing belief among Governments that tax payers should not be required to bailout banks in the event of another global financial crisis
