Destructive winds buffet coastal WA as Cyclone Christine makes landfall

Torrential rain and destructive winds with gusts up to 170 kilometres per hour have been recorded as Severe Tropical Cyclone Christine crossed the WA coast.

The category three cyclone crossed the Pilbara coast between Karratha and Port Hedland late last night, cutting power to about 7000 customers.

Residents of the towns remain on red alert and the authorities say the full extent of the damage will not be known until the storm has cleared.

As of early this morning local time, the State Emergency Service (SES) had primarily received reports of minor damage but warn that situation could become much bleaker when a proper assessment can be made.

Roebourne was one of the hardest hit areas, recording nearly 100 millimetres of rain in just four hours, between 8.30pm last night to just after midnight (local time).

It is difficult to see this shell shocked English team recovering their composure. Only the weather, Australian injuries, or a lack of killer instinct may spare them a series whitewash.
