Michael Schumacher fighting for life after French ski crash

Former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition in a coma after hitting his head while skiing in the French Alps, the hospital treating him says.

The 44-year-old German "was suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation," the hospital said in a statement.

French media, citing a medical source, reported that Schumacher had suffered a brain haemorrhage.

The director of the French resort of Meribel earlier said Schumacher had been wearing a helmet while skiing off-piste with his son, 14, and was conscious "but very agitated" during the transport to the hospital.

Schumacher, who retired last year, is F1's most decorated champion, with a record 91 grand prix wins.

Ashes: every which way to lose

The mark of England's three consecutive Ashes series victories has been its ability to take a punch and lose a session but storm back with bat or ball when it really mattered.

I fully expected that to be the decisive difference this time as well. So it has, except the previously erratic Australians have been the team grabbing its fortunes at the flood.

It is difficult to see this shell shocked English team recovering their composure. Only the weather, Australian injuries, or a lack of killer instinct may spare them a series whitewash.

Several killed by explosion on Russian trolleybus

At least 10 people have been killed by an explosion on the trolleybus in the southern Russian city of Volgograd, Russia's Interfax news agency is reporting.

The blast on the electricity-powered public bus comes a day after a suicide attacker set off a bomb in the city's main train station, killing at least 16 people and wounding more than 40 others.

Officials initially said the bomber was a lone woman, however those claims have now been replaced by uncertainty about who was behind the attack.

Just two days ago a car bomb in another southern city left three dead and in October another female suicide bomber killed six in an attack on a bus in Volgograd.
