Obama slams 'Republican shutdown' as health policy rolls out

US president Barack Obama has blamed the government shutdown on an "ideological crusade" by Republicans to derail his healthcare program.

More than 800,000 government workers are no longer turning up to work since the shutdown came into effect at midnight on Monday (local time).

Despite this, the centrepiece of Obamacare - subsidised health insurance - is now being sold online across all US states, in a move Mr Obama says will allow tens of millions of uninsured Americans to get medical coverage.

Mr Obama says it is strange the Republicans have stopped the government without achieving their goal of stopping his reforms.

What Greg Hunt didn't say about the carbon price

There's been a lot of hot air blowing around on Labor's carbon policy, including that its pricing scheme has not managed to stem emissions in the 15 months it's been operating. 

New federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt says that under the carbon price emissions have actually increased.

"The strange thing about the carbon tax was that emissions went up, not down, from 560 to 637 million tonnes," Mr Hunt said.
