Obama slams 'Republican shutdown' as health policy rolls out

US president Barack Obama has blamed the government shutdown on an "ideological crusade" by Republicans to derail his healthcare program.

More than 800,000 government workers are no longer turning up to work since the shutdown came into affect at midnight on Monday (local time).

Despite this, the centrepiece of Obamacare - subsidised health insurance - is now being sold online across all US states, in a move Mr Obama says will allow tens of millions of uninsured Americans to get medical coverage.

Mr Obama says it is strange the Republicans have stopped the government without achieving their goal of stopping his reforms.

"This Republican shutdown did not have to happen - I want every American to understand why it did happen," he said.

Crunching the numbers: Abbott's public service cuts

One of the more contested claims during the election campaign was the Liberal Party's policy to cut the Australia Public Service by 12,000.

The contested nature of the policy highlighted the lack of details provided by the Liberal Party to the public. As it did not release its costings we still don't actually know how the Government intends to meet its target.

Fortunately by around October 18 we will get the details. Until then, we can only speculate.

What Greg Hunt didn't say about the carbon price

There's been a lot of hot air blowing around on Labor's carbon policy, including that its pricing scheme has not managed to stem emissions in the 15 months it's been operating.

New federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt says that under the carbon price emissions have actually increased.

"The strange thing about the carbon tax was that emissions went up, not down, from 560 to 637 million tonnes," Mr Hunt said.
