| By Michael Vincent and wires US Republicans have offered a plan which would postpone a possible US default, as they urged president Barack Obama to negotiate an end to the 10-day government shutdown. The White House says Mr Obama will look at the Republican offer for a short-term debt deal that would only last six weeks, until possibly the middle or end of November. But the White House said Mr Obama would rather "it be longer than a few weeks". The proposal is a significant shift for Republicans, who had hoped to use the disruption caused by the shutdown to extract concessions on spending and healthcare from Mr Obama. More » |
