Chemical weapons watchdog hailed for Nobel Peace Prize win

The international community has hailed the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons' surprise Nobel Peace Prize win as much-deserved recognition for its behind-the-scenes work to rid the world of chemical weapons.

The little-known Hague-based organisation emerged from the shadows in recent months as its inspectors were called in to verify Syria's claims of destroying its chemical arsenal.

The group, supported by the UN, aims to help destroy Syria's chemical weapons stockpile by November 1.

Pakistani schoolgirl activist Malala Yousafzai was favoured to take out the award, along with Denis Mukwege, a doctor from the Democratic Republic of Congo who has been mooted as a possible laureate many times.

US secretary of state John Kerry and French president Francois Hollande are among those to have congratulated the OPCW on its victory.

If the other parties take up the challenge of increased democracy, it might be possible to start transforming Australian politics from the vicious, negative, zero-sum game of recent years.
