Five dead as cyclone crashes into Indian coast

A huge cyclone has crossed the eastern coast of India, killing at least five people and forcing about 550,000 people into overcrowded shelters as the storm threatened to cut a swathe of devastation through farmland and fishing hamlets.

Cyclone Phailin was expected to remain a "very severe cyclonic storm" packing winds of up to 210 kilometres per hour into the early hours of Sunday before steadily weakening as it moved inland in the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

Weather and disaster management officials say the storm's rain and wind could affect 12 million people.

Some forecasts said the storm lost some of its strength before reaching the coast, but it remained India's strongest since a typhoon killed 10,000 people in the same region 14 years ago.

Labor's experiment in democracy doesn't end here

Any doubts about Labor's new leadership system, which gives branch members 50 per cent of the say in choosing the federal leader, have been comprehensively quashed even before the result is known.

The election battle between Bill Shorten and Anthony Albanese has shown that a mature, rational and sensible politics - which debates ideas, values and vision without degenerating into petty point scoring - is still possible.

If the other parties take up the challenge of increased democracy, it might be possible to start transforming Australian politics from the vicious, negative, zero-sum game of recent years.

Obama and Republicans push for end to fiscal impasse

Barack Obama and congressional Republican leaders are inching towards a resolution to their fiscal impasse, but struggling to nail down details of a short-term deal to increase the US debt limit and reopen the government.

Mr Obama met Senate Republicans at the White House and spoke with House of Representatives speaker John Boehner by phone as negotiations intensified to find a way to get federal workers back on the job.

It was hard to gauge the progress of talks, as all sides refused to divulge specific details of what is being discussed.

But both sides spoke with new optimism about the possibility of avoiding a fiscal crisis, and lawmakers were expected to work through the weekend with a goal of finishing a deal by early next week.

Mr Obama also held a conference call with 150 major business leaders and 25 governors about the impact of the shutdown on the US economy.
