Obama begins talks with Congress as shutdown continues

United States president Barack Obama has begun talks with leaders of Congress in which he is expected to urge them to end the government shutdown which is now in its second day.

Mr Obama has been forced to cancel his visit to Malaysia and the Philippines next week and is still considering whether to go ahead with the remainder of his Asia trip to Indonesia and Brunei.

"Absolutely I am exasperated, because this is entirely unnecessary," Mr Obama told CNBC of the shutdown which has forced about 800,000 government workers onto unpaid leave.

Mr Obama wants congressional leaders to pass a new budget without tampering with his Obamacare health laws.
