Woman shot outside US Capitol building, sparking brief lockdown

A woman who allegedly tried to ram through security barricades at the White House has reportedly been shot dead by police outside the US Capitol building, sparking a brief lockdown of the complex.

Officials say the woman led police on a car chase across central Washington after the White House incident, before crashing a few kilometres away, outside the Capitol.

An official said the female suspect was killed by police, but a police official later said the woman's condition was unknown.

A Capitol policeman was also injured when the car crashed outside the iconic landmark.

Police are investigating reports a child was in the suspect's car, and say there is no information to suggest a link to terrorism.

Abbott rises to his first foreign policy challenge

It was the Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarck who first said that laws are like sausages; it is better not to see them being made.

And so it was with this week's agreement between Tony Abbott and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on asylum seekers. The two leaders insisted that tensions had eased and that the Indonesians had been reassured there is nothing in Australia's approach that breaches their sovereignty.

It's just that we have no idea how they came to that diplomatic breakthrough, and to what extent, if any, the Abbott Government has had to compromise.

Obama tells Republicans to stop shutdown 'farce'

US president Barack Obama has called on Republicans to hold a vote to "end the farce" of a shutdown, as fears grow of wider economic consequences from the federal stoppage.

Mr Obama addressed workers at a construction company in Maryland on the third day of the shutdown, telling them the longer the budget impasse goes on the worse it will be.

"There's one way out of this reckless and damaging Republican shutdown," he said.

"Congress has to pass a budget that funds our government with no partisan strings attached."

Dr Switkowski will also replace Mike Quigley as chief executive of NBN Co in the short term.

Mr Turnbull described the appointment as being "part of a clean slate for the NBN."

"In appointing Dr Switkowski to the board as chairman, we're appointing one of the most experienced telecom executives in Australia," he said.
