Where does the madness of quotas end?

One of the few points of difference in Bill Shorten's leadership pitch is the suggestion that Labor's quota system be expanded to embrace not only women but also Indigenous Australians and gays.

But if Shorten is fair dinkum about this thought bubble, then he totally misunderstands the nature and purpose of representative democracy.

We elect our members to represent us, not to resemble us as closely as possible; Shorten sits in the House of Representatives, not the House of Statistical Archetypes. If you you start down this path, where do you stop?

Labor wants wider probe into entitlement claims

Labor is calling for a wider investigation into entitlement claims after a number of Coalition MPs charged taxpayers for travel to attend the weddings of colleagues.

PM Tony Abbott has repaid about $1,700 he claimed for travel to attend the weddings of Sophie Mirabella and Peter Slipper in 2006.

Mr Abbott says he thought that as leader of the House, he had certain representational roles and that attending weddings was within the entitlement.

He says he has repaid the money to avoid any doubt after the Finance Department said it was not sure whether the claims were within the entitlement.

Opposition spokesman Mark Dreyfus says there have been a string of similar cases and it is a pattern of behaviour within the Coalition.
