Motorists urged not to panic-buy amid fuel supply concerns

Motorists in eastern states are being urged not to panic-buy, with almost 100 fuel tankers taken off the road following last week's fatal crash on Sydney's northern beaches.

Petrol company BP says supplies are tight and there are intermittent shortages of fuel at service stations across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

A BP spokesman says taking dozens of trucks off the road has seriously impacted on its capacity to distribute fuel.

A safety audit has been carried out on trucks owned by Victorian-based transport company Cootes, whose tanker was involved in the crash that claimed two lives.

At least 94 Cootes trucks have been taken off the road.
