Fire crews get upper hand in Victoria, SA as conditions flare in NSW

Firefighters are battling to control several blazes burning in New South Wales, as crews in Victoria and South Australia take advantage of milder conditions.

More than 80 fires are burning in NSW, the largest of which is in the Murraguldrie State Forest near Wagga Wagga in the state's south.

In South Australia, at least 15 houses have been lost in blazes across the state this weekend, and it may take some days before the total damage is known.

Meanwhile residents of Halls Gap is Victoria's west have returned home now the bushfire emergency has passed, but the community is short on water supplies.

Tony Abbott's high-stakes expectations game

While often portrayed in more simplistic terms, as promises kept or broken, the compact sealed between Australian voters and the government they have installed is more fundamentally about the expectations of what values and principles will be upheld.
