Morrison rejects claims Navy burned asylum seekers

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says he will not tolerate people "sledging" Australian Navy personnel amid allegations asylum seekers were burned after being forced to hold on to parts of a hot boat engine.

ABC News has obtained vision of asylum seekers being medically assessed for burns that Indonesian police say were inflicted by the Australian Navy.

Mr Morrison says the claims are unsubstantiated.

"The Australian Government is not going to put up with people sledging the Australian Navy with unsubstantiated claims when they have high levels of motivation for spinning stories in order to undermine this government's very successful border protection program," he said.

"I think the mere publication of things that are clearly so unsubstantiated I think is very unfortunate," he added.

All's quiet on the Nauru front

Australia is Nauru's paymaster. If Tony Abbott told the president of Nauru to reinstate the chief magistrate and respect the Supreme Court, it is a near certainty that Nauru would comply.

The problem is, if the Supreme Court of Nauru was allowed to give effect to the protections in the Nauruan Constitution, that could bring the Pacific Solution to an end.

That's why I do not expect the Abbott Government to do anything effective to reinstate the rule of law in Nauru. And if they do nothing, they should be asked to explain why.

Mr Macfarlane says there has been no consultation on the plan which he described as lacking depth.

Inflation comes in higher than expected, puts pressure on rates

Inflation has risen more than economists expected, diminishing the prospect of further interest rate cuts.

The Bureau of Statistics Consumer Price Index for the December quarter rose 0.8 per cent, ahead of economist forecasts which centred on 0.5 per cent.

That took the annual rate of inflation to 2.7 per cent, above the mid-point of the Reserve Bank's 2-3 per cent target band.
