But I think we are better than fear, and nobler than vengeance. After the destructive folly of past generations, surely the ocean finally deserves the best of us as a species.

WA Government urged to scrap new shark policies

More than 4,000 people have converged on a Perth beach to protest against the WA Government's new shark culling policy.

The government is allowing professional fisherman to catch and kill any large great white, tiger or bull sharks using hooks on baited drum lines at some WA beaches.

Sharks longer than three metres are being targeted, but environmentalists fear other animals will be caught on the lines.

The government announced the measures after seven fatal attacks in three years.
