Melbourne explosion 'not malicious', injured officers fighting for life

Police say a gas explosion at a Melbourne flat which seriously injured two police officers making a house call was most likely part of a suicide attempt and not malicious.

Two female police officers are fighting for their lives after the explosion occurred on Hambleton Street in Middle Park last night.

A male officer and two firefighters were also injured.

An LPG canister exploded as emergency services were checking on a man believed to be in his 40s after he had threatened to self-harm.

Victorian deputy police commissioner Tim Cartwright says while police are still trying to establish the facts, "indications are it was not a malicious act".

He says the tenant, who needed treatment for burns, is under police guard in hospital.

Deputy Commissioner Cartwright says it is the "worst nightmare" for police who put their lives on the line daily.

A surfer's defence of the great white shark

In response to a spate of fatal shark attacks over the past few years, baited hooks will soon be set off WA's most popular beaches.

But I think we are better than fear, and nobler than vengeance. After the destructive folly of past generations, surely the ocean finally deserves the best of us as a species.

Surfers should be at the centre of a defence of the oceans, not hand in hand with those that seek to destroy its creatures without any attempt at a scientific reasoning for it.
