Fire crews on alert as south-east sizzles in heatwave

South-eastern Australia is facing another sweltering day, with temperatures forecast to again top 40 degrees Celsius in some areas.

The mercury has soared in Victoria, South Australia and southern New South Wales over recent days and relief is unlikely to come until the end of the week.

A total fire ban remains in place in Victoria, where firefighters worked through the night battling blazes.

In Melbourne the temperature peaked just shy of 43C yesterday, and residents continued to swelter overnight with temperatures remaining in the mid-30s for most of the night.

In South Australia, Adelaide had its fourth hottest day on record yesterday, reaching 45.1C, and the temperature is expected to hover there again today.
