Heatwaves in Australia more frequent, hotter and longer, report reveals

Heatwaves in Australia are becoming more frequent, hotter and are lasting longer, a report released today by the Climate Council says.

The interim findings of the report come as southern Australia swelters through a heatwave which has seen it regularly record temperatures over 40C.

The report reveals hot records are now happening three times more often than cold records, and that the number of hot days across Australia have more than doubled.

Co-author Dr Sarah Perkins says the change has occurred mostly in Australia's south-east and west.

The report says the extreme weather patterns can be attributed to climate change.

2014 may be the year of deflation

The big economic question for 2014 is whether the Australian dollar will keep trending lower, with perhaps a secondary question about whether Australian property will continue to boom.

But it won't be business as usual for the global economy if it finally succumbs to deflation.

Fardon to stay out of jail after High Court appeal abandoned

The Queensland Government has abandoned plans for a High Court appeal to keep serial sex offenders like Robert John Fardon behind bars.

Fardon was freed from jail last month and moved into a residential facility at Wacol in south-west Brisbane when Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie lost a second appeal against his release.

The Court of Appeal also ruled new laws giving the Government the power to keep some sex offenders behind bars were invalid.

At the time Mr Bleijie said he would seek legal advice on launching an appeal in the High Court.

The Government has now received that advice and says it indicated such an appeal would not be successful.
