Government considers buying lifeboats for asylum seekers: report

The Federal Government is reportedly set to buy lifeboats which will be used to return asylum seekers to Indonesia if they are intercepted on unseaworthy boats.

Fairfax media is reporting the Government is purchasing 16 large, engine-powered lifeboats to ferry asylum seekers back to Indonesia.

The report says the high-visibility lifeboats could carry dozens of passengers along with food and water for at least a week.

The news follows revelations the Australian Navy has recently turned back two asylum seeker boats.

The Opposition and the Greens have hit out at the plan, with Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young saying the Coalition's border protection policy is in tatters.

As such, active enforcement of Australian law against Japanese whalers could unleash a diplomatic and legal maelstrom with very serious consequences for Australia's Antarctic claim and for the Antarctic Treaty.

Greg Hunt's decision to undertake aerial monitoring of the Japanese whalers is a more prudent course of action, keeping the Australian government at arms' length from any Southern Ocean confrontations that may develop between Sea Shepherd and the whalers.

With Christmas trees and lights barely down, retail analysts have already come up with their first estimates of pre-Christmas sales.

Retailers are likely to have lifted sales by 3-4 per cent overall this Christmas, but not all stores fared so well.

Citi analysts say electronics stores did well out of tablet sales, but fashion retailers had to discount heavily to make sales.
