Indonesia's government and military united in opposing boat turn-backs

Indonesia's government and military are closing ranks against Australia's policy of turning back asylum seeker boats, after claims two boats were recently forced back to Indonesia.

The Indonesian president's office has backed his foreign minister's rejection of Australia policy, saying turning boats back to Indonesia is "unhelpful".

And Indonesia's military chief General Moeldoko, who was quoted in the Jakarta Post as saying he had "agreed" to Australia's policy, now says his words have been "twisted".

Another senior Indonesian official has hit out at Australia's reported plan to use lifeboats to ferry people back to Indonesia, saying such an operation would amount to state-sanctioned "people smuggling".

The chairman of Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Commission said his country's military would act to stop such an operation, which he said would "trigger more conflict" and have a "fundamental" impact on relations between the two countries.

The environment would pay for 'free trade'

Do we really want to create an Australia where we have to pay foreign corporations not to dig up or destroy our coastline or native forests?

That could be the reality under the secretive new Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement and its likely Investor State Dispute Settlement clauses.

The potential benefits from these clauses to Australians are very limited. Our laws should protect Australians and the places we love - not the profits of foreign multinationals.

Retail sales double expectations, building approvals solid

Retailers enjoyed a stronger-than-expected rise in sales during November, while building figures remained solid.

Official figures showed a 0.7 per cent rise in retail sales, more than double the growth forecast by most economists.

Building approval figures dipped slightly on a fall in apartments, but the less volatile detached house sector continued to rise strongly in a sign residential construction is responding to low interest rates.

Refugee fears for lives of brothers as Government gets tough on reunions

A 22-year-old Hazara refugee says he fears for the lives of his young brothers in Pakistan after hearing it could be 10 years before they can join him in Australia.

After his father was killed by the Taliban, Zaman Nasiry came to Australia by boat in 2011 and has since been granted a permanent visa.

Last year his wife and mother were killed in a market bombing by the Taliban in Quetta, Pakistan, leaving his three younger brothers - aged 13, 11 and 9 - alone.

His concerns come as the Federal Government moves to make it harder for refugees who arrived by boat and are now living in Australia to be reunited with their families.
