Angry China demands Malaysia hand over MH370 evidence

China has demanded proof and distraught relatives have reacted with shock and anger after Malaysia announced it now believed missing flight MH370 crashed into the southern Indian Ocean with no survivors.

Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak announced overnight that new satellite data from UK company Inmarsat showed MH370's last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

"It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that in light of this new data, MH370 flight ended in the southern Indian Ocean," he said.

Relatives of Chinese passengers aboard the missing plane reacted with hysteria at the news, with one woman screaming "it's not possible, it's not possible!" before collapsing.

A statement read out by families of some Chinese passengers labelled Malaysia Airlines and the Malaysian government as "the real executioners who killed".

Australian authorities have suspended the search until further notice because of poor weather conditions, including 80kph gale-force winds and four-metre swell.

Politics stands in the way of a full 18C repeal

George Brandis's exposure draft of amendments to the Racial Discrimination Act is a magnificent example of how to repeal legislation without admitting you're repealing legislation.

Its new exemptions make clear the fundamental importance of free discussion on any matter of public interest, no matter how extreme that discussion is.

But unfortunately, it will still be for the courts to decide just how far freedom now goes.

US stocks sag on weak manufacturing data

Stocks have closed lower on Wall Street after a worse-than-expected manufacturing report sparked a sell-off midway through the session.

The Markit preliminary US survey slipped from a near four-year high reached in February.

The rate of growth and the pace of hiring remained strong but investors were rattled by the weaker-than-expected headline number and a fall in new orders and output parts of the survey.

Investors were also rattled by the poor Markit/HSBC manufacturing report out of China, which fell to an eight-month low.

Senate rejects bid to repeal mining tax

The Senate has rejected the Federal Government's push to repeal the mining tax.

The Lower House passed the legislation in November, but it had not been expected to pass the Senate which is controlled by Labor and the Greens until the changeover in July.

Before the bill was rejected, Finance Minister Mathias Cormann reminded the chamber of the upcoming West Australian Senate election.

Greens leader Christine Milne says the repeal would have served mining companies, but not the people of Australia.
