MH370 search won't be scaled back any time soon: Abbott

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says he is not putting a time limit on how long the search will continue for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

Mr Abbott's comments come after an Australian Orion aircraft identified several orange objects in the southern Indian Ocean in what is being described as "the most promising leads" in the search for flight MH370.

Crew on board the aircraft spotted the objects, each greater than two metres in size, in a five-nautical-mile area within the search zone.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority says yesterday's weather in the area was "reasonable" with reported visibility greater than 10 kilometres.

Flight Lieutenant Russell Adams says he is hopeful of finding more objects if favourable conditions continue.

Australian Navy vessel Ocean Shield has been equipped with two different devices to help locate the flight data recorders.

The ignoble history of knighthoods

It was William the Bastard who introduced the pompous idea of chivalry and titles. Have we found our modern-day imitation not in England, but in Canberra?

While conservatives have generally loved the idea of knighthoods, Labor premiers and prime ministers were more cautious, but they were not above using the system when it suited them.

It appears history may repeat itself as Tony Abbott attempts to use the issue as a wedge against Bill Shorten and his mother-in-law.

Unofficial inflation gauge points to November rate rise

A private measure of inflation has reinforced predictions that the Reserve Bank will lift the cash rate before the end of the year.

The TD Securities - Melbourne Institute Inflation Gauge rose by 0.2 per cent in March, taking the annual rate towards the top of the RBA's comfort zone at 2.7 per cent.

"We're not seeing prices falling anywhere in the economy at this stage," TD's Annette Beacher said.

Ms Beacher is expecting the RBA to lift the cash rate on Melbourne Cup Day and again in December.
