Malaysia Airlines flight 'ended in southern Indian Ocean'

Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak has announced that all evidence suggests Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean and there are no survivors.

The airline has contacted the families of passengers and crew to inform them of the development.

Mr Najib said new satellite data from UK satellite company Inmarsat showed MH370's last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

"It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that in light of this new data, MH370 flight ended in the southern Indian Ocean," he said.

Relatives of Chinese passengers aboard the missing plane reacted with hysteria at the news, with one woman screaming "it's not possible, it's not possible!" before collapsing.

Aircraft and ships from more than 20 nations have been hunting for any signs of the Boeing 777 since it disappeared on March 8, carrying 239 people including six Australians.

Manus Island negligence may have financial costs

When things go sour at the Manus Island and Nauru detention centres, the Commonwealth Government likes to distance itself from liability for wrongs that may have been committed by contractors who work at these centres.

Such an approach is inconsistent with the law around what is called non-delegable duty of care.

The truth is, the Australian taxpayer is potentially exposed to massive liability if there are claims made by detainees over the next few years.

Financial advice overhaul to be delayed: Cormann

The Federal Government has frozen plans to change financial advice rules, which until recently were being pushed by former minister Arthur Sinodinos.

The changes to the "future of financial advice" legislation would remove a catch-all clause stipulating that financial advisers must act in the best interests of their client.

Consumer groups, industry superannuation funds and the Financial Planning Association have raised concerns the changes could see call-centre workers and bank tellers receive commissions for giving general advice.

The changes were announced just before Christmas by former assistant treasurer Arthur Sinodinos.
