Ex-Defence chief to take lead in MH370 search

Former Australian Defence Force chief Angus Houston will take a leading role in coordinating the international search effort for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

The retired Air Chief Marshal will head a new Joint Agency Coordination Centre to be set up in Perth which will coordinate the mammoth search already underway to find the missing plane.

His role will be to maintain clear lines of communication between all of the international partners as well as with the families of the passengers, many of whom are expected to travel to Australia as the search progresses.

Weather conditions were expected to deteriorate off the West Australian coast today as the search for the missing aircraft resumed.

Chinese and Australian ships in the southern Indian Ocean have retrieved a number of objects, but so far nothing recovered has been confirmed as being related to MH370.

How to spread gay rights beyond the West

While the march of gay rights continues across the West, in parts of the world they are going backwards, with states hardening their repression of people on the basis of their sexuality.

It is tempting to express outrage at abuses done in the name of protecting morality, but indignation is not the basis for good policy.

We need strategic reflection on the best way to promote greater acceptance of sexual diversity in a world where too often it has become a touchstone for fear, prejudice and hatred.

Unions unfazed by Qld Government legal action in doctors dispute

Unions say they will not be silenced or intimidated by the Queensland Government's attempt to take them to court over doctors' contracts.

Queensland Health has applied to the Federal Court in Brisbane in a bid to stop information "misrepresenting" the Government's position on individual employment contracts.

Unions have said doctors could lose a third of their wages under the new contracts and they would also lose protection from being sacked.

Queensland Health director-general Ian Maynard says the unions are exaggerating and not being factual and that is why legal action is being taken.
