Aircraft spot multiple objects in new MH370 search area: AMSA

Five military aircraft from Australia and New Zealand spotted objects late on Friday in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, just hours after the search zone shifted closer to the West Australian coast.

The Boeing 777 is thought to have crashed on March 8 with 239 people on board, including six Australians, after flying thousands of kilometres off course.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion spotted a number of objects "white or light in colour" within the new search area, while a Royal Australian Air Force Orion reported seeing two "blue/grey rectangular objects" floating in the ocean.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority says the sightings will need to be confirmed by ship, a process expected to begin today.

Meanwhile, relatives of the Chinese passengers on board the plane, unhappy with Malaysia's handling of the investigation into the aircraft's disappearance, have demanded China mount its own inquiry.

How to spread gay rights beyond the West

While the march of gay rights continues across the West, in parts of the world they are going backwards, with states hardening their repression of people on the basis of their sexuality.

It is tempting to express outrage at abuses done in the name of protecting morality, but indignation is not the basis for good policy.

We need strategic reflection on the best way to promote greater acceptance of sexual diversity in a world where too often it has become a touchstone for fear, prejudice and hatred.
