Operation Bring Them Home to secure and identify MH17 victims

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced a major operation to recover and identify the bodies from the Malaysia Airlines disaster, including an Australian security team to help secure the crash site in Ukraine.

Mr Abbott said Operation Bring Them Home would involve consular officials, victim identification and forensic experts and air safety investigators in Ukraine and the Netherlands.

An Australian C-17 military transport aircraft will arrive in the Netherlands later today and will help transport bodies out of Ukraine.

The Prime Minister says he is disturbed by the latest scenes from the crash site.

"After the crime comes the cover-up. What we have seen is evidence tampering on an industrial scale and obviously that has to stop."

Politics, not policy, will decide who gets bailed out

Rather than ask what we should do about financial institutions deemed "too big to fail", we should look at what we can do. And the answer is almost certainly nothing.

Because no matter what the current Murray Inquiry recommends, the decision of which firms to bail out will be made by the policymakers of the future, according to their own whims, and mindful of political, not economic, considerations.

You can have all the rules and legislation you like, but when the panic hits, political expedience is going to win every time.

Reserve Bank governor Stevens encourages risk-taking firms

The Reserve Bank's governor Glenn Stevens says businesses need to focus less on risk reduction and more on growth.

Speaking to an audience of economists at a lunch, Mr Stevens says a culture of risk aversion has gripped the business community since the financial crisis.

The RBA's governor has urged the need for greater business and infrastructure investment in order to lift western economies out of their low growth rates.

Mr Stevens says governments, and the G20, will need to play a key role, as central banks can provide cheap money but cannot ensure that it is put to productive uses.
