Nitschke under fire over 'rational' suicide remarks

Mental health advocates have condemned Philip Nitschke's comments about "rational" suicide after a 45-year-old man took his own life using the suicide drug Nembutal.

Dr Nitschke says Perth man Nigel Brayley made a "rational" decision to end his life, although he admits he may not be "well-trained" enough to assess the mental health of those who approach him for help.

Mr Brayley, 45, began emailing Dr Nitschke after police launched a murder investigation into his wife's death. He did not have a terminal illness, but Dr Nitschke supported his decision to take his own life.

The Black Dog institute says Dr Nitschke has "significantly raised the probability of suicide in the community".

Research from Macquarie's banking analysts says up to $27 billion is under threat from so-called digital disruptors in the banks' key payments and lending markets.

The Macquarie team says most immediate threat is the $9 billion payments market, which faces competition from alternative platforms.

Longer term, Macquarie says banks face an even bigger problem with their lending business.

Cancer risk prompts call to test more industrial sites

The Greens are calling for testing of more former industrial sites in South Australia for toxic pollution.

The residents of three streets at Clovelly Park in Adelaide's southern suburbs are to be moved out because of a carcinogenic substance detected in air, water and soil.
