More than 150 asylum seekers being held on Customs boat

Government lawyers have told a High Court hearing 72 hours' notice will be given before more than 150 asylum seekers being held on a Customs ship are handed back to Sri Lankan authorities.

Lawyers acting for about one third of 153 asylum seekers, whose whereabouts the Government refuses to disclose, are seeking to challenge the legality of the Commonwealth's actions.

Today's hearing heard the first official confirmation that the asylum seekers - including children as young as 2 - have been intercepted and are being held on a Customs vessel.

Property spruikers put on notice by states

Three state governments are sending warning letters to property spruikers, amid growing concerns about high-pressure tactics used on consumers at seminars across the country.

Western Australia, New South Wales and Victoria have sent letters to dozens of spruikers warning them they must abide by Australian Consumer Law or could be hit with penalties of up to $1.1 million.

The authorities are warning consumers to be wary of rent-to-buy and vendor-finance schemes which leave people highly exposed if they could not afford to continue with the arrangement.
