ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what happened overnight:

  • Scientists confirmed they had evidence of flowing water on the surface of Mars. NASA said it allowed for the possibility of microbial life on present-day Mars, as well as a water source for future human exploration.

  • If you want more from Mars, here are 10 highlights from a Reddit AMA session scientists held after the announcement. Meanwhile, in an obvious attempt to steal the spotlight, there was a super blood moon last night too.

  • At the UN general assembly, Vladimir Putin said it was "an enormous mistake" to fight Islamic State without including Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. Barack Obama countered that Assad could not remain in power in the long-term.

  • Fremantle's Nat Fyfe held on to win AFL's Brownlow Medal, while North Queensland's Johnathan Thurston claimed the NRL's version, the Dally M, for the fourth time.

  • And ICYMI, on Q&A last night Barnaby Joyce said Tony Abbott should have been allowed to stand down, rather than being rolled in a leadership ballot.

Speaking of the ballot... Here's your chance to go behind the scenes of the ABC's coverage of the Liberal leadership spill, with insights from our reporters and editors in Parliament House and digital newsrooms.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 07.00am AEST: Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin are due to hold one-on-one talks at the UN

  • 08.45am AEST: Labor frontbencher Doug Cameron is due to speak to the media before a Senate inquiry into the construction industry

  • 09.00am AEST: Tony Abbott is due to speak to Sydney radio host Ray Hadley

  • 10.00am AEST: The funeral will be held for Mildura toddler Nikki Francis-Coslovich, who was found dead in her home last month

  • 11.15pm AEST: Britain's new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn delivers the keynote address to the party's annual conference.
