ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Tony Abbott is tipped to announce a boost to Australia's intake of Syrian refugees today. Government sources say Australia's response will be "generous" and "permanent", while Julie Bishop says it will be "considered and measured". Air strikes in Syria are also on the agenda. In other news, a man has been arrested over the deaths of his mother and eight-year-old nephew in Sydney's west. They were found dead with stab wounds outside a house. Nick Kyrgios has been dumped from the Davis Cup team; meanwhile Australia won the soccer, but lost the cricket.

Coming up today: at 9.00am AEST, Venus and Serena Williams face off in a US Open quarter-final. At 11.00am AEST, cricketer Brad Haddin is expected to make an announcement about his playing future. At 12.30pm AEST, author Jon Entine is at the National Press Club. At 5.00pm AEST, European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker outlines his plan for mandatory quotas to resettle asylum seekers. Also at 5.00pm AEST, Auburn council holds a meeting calling for deputy mayor Salim Mehajer to quit after his wedding closed city streets. And at 8.00pm AEST, Tony Abbott heads to Port Moresby for the Pacific Islands Forum.
