ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his troops to start withdrawing from Syria, saying they have largely fulfilled their objectives. The announcement came on the same day as UN-brokered peace talks resumed in Geneva. No deadline was given for the withdrawal

  • ABC journalist Linton Besser and cameraman Louie Eroglu may be able to leave Malaysia this morning after an order to face court was overturned. The pair's lawyer has been told that no charges will be filed against them after they questioned Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak over a corruption scandal

  • Australia's chief scientist has warned that the planet is "losing the battle" against climate change. New data, released by NASA, showed February was the hottest month on record. "There is genuine reason for concern," Dr Alan Finkel said on Q&A

'Fairy circles' have been spotted in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Until recently the bare soil rings were thought to only exist in Namibia

Here's what's coming up:

  • 8:35am AEDT: Treasurer Scott Morrison will open a business summit in Melbourne. Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce, CSIRO chief executive Larry Marshall and Westfield chairman Frank Lowy will also address the summit

  • 11:00am AEDT: Trade Minister Steve Ciobo will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif. Mr Zarif will also meet with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull today

  • 12:30pm AEDT: Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will address the National Press Club
