ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • A book that chronicles the demise of the Abbott government has been released today, filled with inside tales of dysfunction and infighting. Former Liberal staffer turned political commentator Niki Savva describes a highly centralised PM's office where chief of staff Peta Credlin excluded MPs, senators and even ministers from policy decisions

  • The Federal Opposition and Greens are today calling on the Government to scrap its plan for a same-sex marriage plebiscite amid confusion over its timing. Attorney-General George Brandis said it would be held before the end of the year but the Prime Minister's office said it would depend on the election date

  • Former US first lady Nancy Reagan has died aged 94. She became one of the most influential first ladies in US history during her Republican husband Ronald Reagan's presidency from 1981 to 1989

Here's a preview of tonight's Four Corners investigation into the life insurance arm of the Commonwealth Bank, which is facing fresh allegations of unethical and unscrupulous behaviour

Here's what's coming up:

  • 9:00am AEDT: The Queensland Government will hold a hearing to investigate the re-emergence of black lung disease

  • 9:45am AEDT: Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is in Melbourne where he will visit an Islamic Museum and meet with Islamic leaders

  • 10:20am AEDT: More than 200 climate scientists will gather in Hobart for a major meeting to discuss the search for the world's oldest ice core and other topics

  • 9:35pm AEDT: The Matildas will play North Korea in a Rio Olympics qualifier
