ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • A search is underway to find people feared trapped in the rubble after a magnitude-6.5 earthquake hit the Japanese island of Kyushu. At least two people died in the quake which collapsed homes and sparked fires

  • The lawyer for Australian mother Sally Faulkner says Channel Nine paid her before she launched a botched child recovery operation in Lebanon. The lawyer said he doesn't know if the payment was explicitly linked to the recovery or just for her story. Ms Faulkner is negotiating with the children's father but if he drops charges against her she'll have to renounce all claims to custody

  • The Federal Government will pursue Clive Palmer and his businesses to recover almost $74 million in entitlements owed to sacked Queensland Nickel workers. Employment Minister Michaelia Cash said the joint venture partners "have not taken care of this business responsibility to look after their workers"

The first episode of the ABC's flagship election podcast The Party Room with Kelly and Karvelas is now available for free download. The first of the weekly podcasts welcomes special guest Barrie Cassidy to recap and analyse all the week's election news
