US on alert after Boston marathon carnage

The FBI has launched a potential terrorist investigation after at least three people died when twin explosions ripped through the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

More than 100 people were injured in the near-simultaneous blasts, which happened as runners finished the marathon, and with tens of thousands of spectators lining the streets.

TV footage showed the blood-stained street littered with casualties after runners were cut down by flying debris. Dozens of people were taken from the scene on stretchers and in wheelchairs.

US president Barack Obama has put federal authorities on alert and vowed to bring those responsible for the blasts to justice.

But the United States simply does not have the intellectual or administrative capacity to construct free and prosperous democracies out of ruins of tyranny and war. Nobody does.
