Coalition backs boost to family payments

The federal Coalition has switched its position and will now "not oppose" a boost to family tax payments as a replacement for the baby bonus.

Labor announced the increased payments for parents with new babies in the budget, while also axing the $5,000 baby bonus.

The Opposition quickly made clear it would support axing the bonus, but last week treasury spokesman Joe Hockey said the Coalition would not go ahead with the higher family benefits payments.

Westpac in global money-laundering case

Mr Ferguson quit Cabinet in March and says his decision to quit politics is in the best interests of the party and his family.
