Anger as multi-million-dollar funding deal backdated to April

The major political parties are set for a $2m windfall ahead of September's election after it was revealed that their deal on election funding includes a clause backdating it to April.

Crossbenchers were already unhappy about taxpayers forking out money to fund the changes, which will see parties and successful independents get 33 cents a year for every primary vote.

Now it has been revealed that the deal will be backdated to April Fool's Day - a decision dubbed "laughable and obscene" by independent MP Andrew Wilkie.
