The Labor Caucus abandoned Julia Gillard last night in favour of Mr Rudd, believing he has a better chance of resurrecting the party's fortunes at the next election. Mr Rudd says he will "identify a date for an election", which could be held as early as August 3 or hold off as late as November 30. But the entire gamble Labor has taken on returning him to the leadership is predicated on his popularity, not his policy chops. The idea that it was somehow Julia Gillard's fault that the media was unable to debate policy and ideas is only plausible if you accept the premise that Gillard herself was entirely to blame for the leadership instability that plagued her prime ministership.
