Oakeshott to quit politics

Federal independent MP Rob Oakeshott has announced he is quitting politics, declaring the past three years to have been the toughest of his life.

Mr Oakeshott won the NSW seat of Lyne from the Nationals in 2008, and signed a deal with Julia Gillard after the 2010 election that helped return Labor to power.

Mr Oakeshott says that after 17 years in public life and with four young children, he has had enough of being away from his family.
