Three women to join Labor's Cabinet

The Federal Government has revealed three new women will be sworn into Cabinet, but will not announce the full ministry until tomorrow.

Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Labor's new team has been finalised, but it will not be revealed today out of respect for the state memorial for Yothu Yindi's frontman.

The announcement of Victorian Senator Jacinta Collins, as well as MPs Julie Collins and Catherine King to the Cabinet, will increase the number of women in the ministry from 9 to 11.

More than a third of Cabinet resigned after last week's leadership ballot, forcing a major frontbench reshuffle just weeks out from an election.

Election a referendum on Labor, and Rudd

Rudd leads Abbott as preferred PM: poll

Labor has been buoyed by a new opinion poll showing a surge in support for the party following Kevin Rudd's return to the top job.

In today's Galaxy poll published in News Limited papers, Mr Rudd leads Tony Abbott as preferred prime minister 51 points to 34.

However, the Coalition continues to lead Labor 51 points to 49, on a two-party preferred basis.

The Prime Minister said he was heartened by the boost Labor has received, but added it was important the party did not get ahead of itself.
