Rudd, O'Farrell in war of words over Navy plan

Kevin Rudd has called New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell "grumpy" in a war of words triggered by the Prime Minister's plan to downgrade Sydney's Garden Island naval base.

Mr Rudd's main campaign announcement for the day was an intention to shift the Navy's headquarters from Sydney to Queensland so that naval assets would be closer to regional hotspots.

Mr O'Farrell used a chance harbour-front encounter with Mr Rudd to complain about not being consulted, saying: "A phone call would have been helpful."

The Prime Minister then hit back, saying the Navy does not belong to Mr O'Farrell and accusing him of ignoring the future of national security.
