US says world cannot let Assad get away with chemical attack

The United States has made clear that it would punish Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the "brutal and flagrant" chemical weapons attack in Damascus that it says killed 1,429 Syrian civilians, including 426 children.

President Barack Obama says despite Britain's rejection of intervention in the Syrian crisis, the US was planning a "limited, narrow" military response.

Secretary of state John Kerry says such a strike would act as a deterrent to those who might consider using chemical weapons in the future, and that any US action had the backing of France, "our oldest ally".

Meanwhile, the UN said its experts had completed the collection of samples and evidence from last week's attack and would now set about analysing them.
