US says Syrian chemical attack 'undeniable' as inspectors shot at

US secretary of state John Kerry says evidence of a massive deadly chemical attack in Syria is "undeniable" and accused the regime of trying to cover it up, signalling the US is edging closer to a possible military response.

Mr Kerry said president Barack Obama "believes there must be accountability for those who would use the world's most heinous weapons against the world's most vulnerable people".

Mr Kerry spoke after UN chemical weapons experts interviewed and took blood samples from victims of last week's apparent attack in Damascus, after the inspectors themselves survived sniper fire that hit their convoy.

"What we saw in Syria last week should shock the conscience of the world; it defies any code of morality," Mr Kerry said.

Can we blame politicians for being risk averse?

The all-time record holder for writing the book on how to run Australia was Fightback. The entire policies and costings were released months before the 1993 election.

Election live: PM announces rethink on naval bases

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will use a speech at the Lowy Institute this morning to flag plans to close Sydney's Garden Island naval base and relocate the facilities to Queensland.

New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell is already up in arms about the proposal, which he says has more to do with shoring up marginal seats north of the border than with Australia's security.

In other news, Tony Abbott will today promise legislation ensuring victims of terrorism dating as far back as the September 11 attacks can claim compensation.
