The ABC understands the hands were removed from an insurgent's corpse and taken back to the Australian base at Tarin Kot. The incident occurred during an operation involving the Australian Special Operations Task Group in Zabul province on April 28 that resulted in the killing of four insurgents. The drums of military intervention are beating once again, and the question of what to do about the civil war in Syria has taken on urgency. However the West can step up its response to the continuing suffering without launching another in a string of legally dubious military interventions. To do our best in a bad situation, we should look instead at supporting humanitarian relief, condemnation, sanctions and other action by the General Assembly under the Uniting for Peace resolution, and referral to the International Criminal Court.
