British MPs vote against military action in Syria

Britain's MPs have voted against military intervention in Syria, despite prime minister David Cameron telling them they could not stand idle in the face of "one of the most abhorrent uses of chemical weapons in a century".

Mr Cameron had made his case for military action against the Syrian government for a chemical weapons attack near Damascus last week which left hundreds dead.

He said while he was convinced Bashar al-Assad's regime was behind the gas attack, there was no "100 per cent certainty" and MPs had to "make a judgment".

But any proposed military action now appears to have been scuttled with Mr Cameron losing a vote 285-272.

Labor stands by Coalition costings after Treasury, Finance rebuke

The Government has defended its use of Treasury and Finance documents to claim the Coalition has a $10 billion hole in its budget savings after the two departments weighed into the debate to clarify their positions.

The Prime Minister yesterday revealed assessments, prepared before the election was called, that he said showed the Opposition's plans will only save the budget $21 billion.

But in an unusual move senior public servants have sought to correct the record and pointed out they did not cost Coalition policies, but Labor assumptions.
