West could act on Syria without UN mandate: Carr

Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr has left open the possibility of an international military response to the Syrian crisis without a mandate from the United Nations.

The United States and its allies are gearing up for a probable military strike against the Syrian regime after a deadly chemical weapons attack in Damascus.

Senator Carr says as the evidence accumulates that Syrian government forces were behind the attack, the regime must be "made to pay a price".

He says "everyone's preference" would be for action under UN auspices, but said if that proved impossible, it would not preclude a response.
