Opposition treasury spokesman Chris Bowen says Qantas is too important to the Australian economy to fail and the Government must consider all options to help the struggling airline. Standard and Poor's cut the airline's credit rating to junk status a day after it announced it will cut 1,000 jobs and reported a half-year loss of up to $300 million. It is understood the airline has flagged several ways the Government could assist it, including a Commonwealth guarantee on its debt. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has told the airline not to expect a handout, but Mr Bowen says the Government should consider taking a "small stake" in the airline.
