Hockey asks Holden to 'come clean' over future

Treasurer Joe Hockey has told Holden to "come clean" over whether it is planning to close down in Australia after its general manager told a federal inquiry that no decision has been made.

Holden boss Mike Devereux told a Productivity Commission hearing in Melbourne this morning the company had not decided whether to stay or go and that no timetable had been set to make such a decision.

The Federal Government has criticised the statement, saying it "just adds to the uncertainty".

"We want them to be honest about it, we want them to be fair dinkum," Mr Hockey told Parliament.

"Either you're here or you're not."

Acting PM Warren Truss has written to Mr Devereaux asking for an immediate clarification about the company's plans for its Australian operations.

Scrapping the debt ceiling is no victory

Yes, the debt ceiling wasn't much of a ceiling. It didn't stop government spending more than it earned.

But that's not the point. A debt ceiling is an assurance that going further into debt has at least some political cost, as Julia Gillard and Wayne Swan found out.

By abolishing the Australian debt ceiling, the Coalition has removed some of the pressure to get the budget back into line. And if there isn't enough pressure, it simply won't happen.

Shark attack strategy: baited drumlines and killing zones

A new shark mitigation strategy is being implemented with baited drum lines to be set along popular beaches in Perth and the South West.

Sharks will also be caught if they enter specific zones, set up along those beaches, because they will be considered an imminent threat.

The new measures follow six fatal attacks by sharks in WA in two years.

Protesters say sharks deserve respect and protection.
