Hurley may have misled Senate on 'combat-related death'

The Chief of the Australian Defence Force appears to have misled the Senate regarding a handcuffed prisoner who was shot dead by an Australian Special Forces officer in Afghanistan. 

General David Hurley told an Estimates hearing that it was a "combat-related death", but a previously secret internal Defence Force report, says the man was shot when the Australian officer was left alone in the room with the prisoner.  

The report, released under Freedom of Information, says the officer claimed the prisoner had attacked him with a knife and so he had fired in self defence, but there were no eye-witnesses.

Help is coming for car industry communities: Abbott

Within days the Federal Government will announce an assistance package for communities affected by car industry job losses.

In a media conference after this morning's Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Canberra, Prime Minister Tony Abbott told reporters he was poised to provide targeted assistance.

"We will make an announcement early next week, that I think will help to restore confidence in the areas most impacted by the impending departure of Ford and Holden," he said.

The mid-year budget update is also due early next week but it is not clear if those figures will be included.
